Corp Goth problems!

For entertainment purposes, I have compiled a silly list of "typical corp goth problems"

The inspiration for this post? I work in outdoor fashion and the majority of my co-workers are outdoor enthusiasts. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, I like to go hiking and camping myself.

Twice a year, my company hosts an event (a summer and winter activity) where we go skiing/snowboarding and usually a boating event in the summer. These activities are planned on a workday, usually a Friday. You pretty much get a free, paid day, it is a pretty sweet deal!

I sometimes go to the winter event because it is not mandatory for us to ski or snowboard, although next year, I may change that. If that is the case, and I do decide to ski or snowboard, do not fret dear readers, I will try to get as many pictures I can of me falling on my ass! Usually, I sit in the chalet sipping hot cocoa with a good book or I walk around to admire the landscape.

The summer event is the bane of my existence. Like most goths, I do not fair well in the heat. Even if I were not to wear black, I burn. SPF 60 sunblock is my best friend. I have bad allergies to pollen and hay fever. I also get heat exhaustion and heat stroke very easily. I learned my lesson the hard way when I fainted from being outdoors too long and was even advised by a doctor to avoid going outdoors on hot/humid days. Like the winter event, it is not mandatory to participate in the sport, you can go and enjoy the day....outdoors!

This year, my company is sending us rafting and will be held  very soon. While the idea of rafting sounds like a lot of fun to me, I am scared I may not fare well in the heat so I am not taking any chances! While everyone is out having fun, I opted to come to work instead! I even checked the weather prediction for that day and it was announced fairly mild but weather can always change.Sometimes, it gets pretty darned hot here in early September.  Instead of having the company pay for me  for nothing, I figured it would be best that I stay indoors where there is air conditioning. I did not want to subject myself to the embarrassment of fainting or getting sick in front of my co-workers! Why ruin their fun because I have vampire-like qualities (how cool is that?)

That being said, I have compiled a cute and fun little list of corp goth problems. Some of these are from my current job, some of them are from other places I have worked. If you have any thing you might want to add, why not! Comments are open!

Here is my list:

- Long skirts and chairs with rollers!

- Hearing remarks because you wore color that day (Luckily for me, they stopped doing that)

-Having a facial piercing fall out while you are eating in the cafeteria

- Putting that facial piercing back in and having a squeamish co-worker walk in the ladies room while you are doing it.

- Helping out upper management with their expense reports and you KNOW that they are pretending to not notice the very obvious black nail polish that got stuck on the tape from taping down all those receipts!

- People thinking and sometimes treating you like a kid because you look younger than you really are and most people think goth is something you grow out of! Certainly a grown woman with a kid cant be goth!

- This isn't really a problem but it is really sweet how some co-workers go out of their way to wish me a Happy Halloween! Even better, they give me candy!

- The majority of my coworkers are sports enthusiasts. I hear sports talk all day!

- When coworkers talk to me about sports and my eyes glaze over!

- I had a very nice fishnet shirt. The sleeves were fishnet and the rest was a cotton fabric, very suitable for work. I got it at the mall several years ago and have not been able to find another one since.  The sleeve got caught on the door and made a huge hole.

- This is no longer an issue (no dress code) but casual Friday was always a challenge.

- Being pulled on the dance floor to songs you don't like at the Christmas party

- When they do play a song you like (usually an 80's song) people stare (sometimes comment) when you bust out a dance move you normally do in a goth club!

- You get a little tipsy at the company Christmas party and you dance to hip-hop!

- People tell you how you remind them of that girl on that TV show NCIS...

- People telling you how they knew someone or how they used to be goth in High school. I get it, to them, this is a "new" conversation but I heard this one so many times! I can almost recite how the conversation goes.

More homework!

The lovely Curious Professor described the following on her blog: "For August's Homework Assignment, you are tasked to show us how songs or music inspire your dress, mood, art, writing, etc. Make that correlation between the song and the product of your inspiration; or, tell us what kind of music you listen to before you go out for the evening, or before work or school, or while you are relaxing at home. Remember, your post doesn't need to be fashion related. Get inspired! Think outside the box! HAVE FUN!!!"

I have a pretty schizophrenic taste in music. I listen to anything between EBM/darkwave (yes, I like  oontz oontz music!) early 80s goth, industrial, classical and musicals. I also throw a lot of classic rock in the mix as well. If I want soothing music, the likes of Nox Arcana, The Cure, Loreena Mckennitt and Delirium are usually my go-to list!

At work, I keep things pretty tame as described in this post here.

When my son was very little, Loreena Mckennitt used to put him to sleep. He had colic and her voice would be soothing to him and he would fall asleep much easier. In fact, I got him sleeping the night by the time he was three months old thanks to this woman. I used to tell him that I was going to play "the nice lady" for him and would rock him to sleep. I would keep the music on until the songs ran out on the playlist. I accidentally uploaded the track "Bonny Podmore" twice on that playlist and usually by the second rendition, he would be sound asleep! Today,  I often listen to her music while I am baking or cooking. It makes my food taste better!

Usually, I listen to anything that comes up on my playlist but lately, we seem to have started a new tradition. Whenever I would drive my son to or from daycare, we would listen to "the scary song".

He really means the second track "Oh My Goth" from Voltaire's new Album "Raised By Bats". I think he calls it the scary song because of the theramin in the background.

After a particularly bad day at work, I would listen to Voltaire's Bitrektual album. It helps get out my inner geek and some of the tracks are really frigging funny. It puts me in a better mood to come home to my second job (cooking, cleaning, taking care of a 3 year old who missed me all day).

Because I am a Whovian!

When my son was VERY little and used to go in the jolly jumper, he was very fond of EBM/Electro style music, specifically this song.  I would play it just to watch him go nuts in the jumper. I would then turn around and find him fast asleep. Thank you Eisenfunk!

Time does fly. Look at those chunky legs!
For the few times I actually go out, usually good ole Siouxsie does it for me. Sometimes for the hell of it, we play the Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack and we sing along. If I have trouble finding an outfit and what really puts me in the mood for going out is "Lucretia My Reflection" I love all sorts of music and just really let my playlist play whatever comes on.

The only time I am really picky and need to have a playlist is when I am working out at the gym and even at that,  Rammstein does it for me!Doesn't need to be a specific song or an album.

A little bit of retro because the sun is out to get me!

Today, I wore color again! Several weeks ago, I purchased this Sourpuss dress. I love Sourpuss clothing, so much! My conservative but accepting boss really liked and approved of this dress as she told me several times today!  She didn't like those pink stockings I wore in this post so much!  She is a sweet lady and they must pay her REALLY well to put up with me! Let's just hope dear old boss doesn't think this will be the norm! The sweater kept me warm in the chilly office but it is sweltering outside. This dress is perfect for a very hot, humid summer day, just like what Montreal is having at the moment!

there was better lighting outside but it was bloody hot on the upstairs balcony!
My buddy wanted to be in the pictures with his mom

Love this expression, "just take the damned picture!"

Bullying in general

Today I decided to not post about fashion or anything else, I decided to be a little more serious. For those of you hoping for a post of pure whimsy, please bare with me. We will get back to our regular scheduled program shortly. What I am about to describe, has effected more than just one of us in our lives and deserves to be repeated.

This is not a personal situation but it is about something a friend of mine is facing and I got inspired to blog. She is not goth, doesn't dress in alternative clothing at all, in fact, she dresses rather conservatively but it seems like her wardrobe choices are cause for harassment. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with the way she dresses and even if she were to change her style, (which I don't think she should because her clothing does not break any company policies) I think she would still be harassed. Some people are very insecure with themselves and they need to find an outlet for their frustration. Unfortunately, my friend is such an outlet.

I think being involved in a subculture, makes me more acutely aware of these situations, which is why I think she came to me in the first place seeking a friendly ear to vent to. I am sure some of us has faced discrimination/bullying/prejudice at one time or another and this is a topic I think we can all relate to. This is a topic that should not be ignored and should be addressed.

I used to work with her in the past and I can speak from experience that she is very a professional, intelligent, and kind hearted person and I am upset that she has to face this kind of treatment, especially from her immediate supervisor. While I don't think it is fair to give clear examples of her problems at the office, here is a wikipedia description of what workplace bullying is.

"Workplace bullying occurs when an employee experiences a persistent pattern of mistreatment from others in the workplace that causes harm.[1] Workplace bullying can include such tactics as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse and humiliation. This type of workplace aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical forms of school bullying, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society. Bullying in the workplace is in the majority of cases reported as having been perpetrated by someone in authority over the target. However, bullies can also be peers, and on occasion can be subordinates.[2] Recent research (2010) has also investigated the impact of the larger organizational context on bullying as well as the group-level processes that impact on the incidence, and maintenance of bullying behaviour.[3] Bullying can be covert or overt. It may be missed by superiors or known by many throughout the organization. Negative effects are not limited to the targeted individuals, and may lead to a decline in employee morale and a change in organizational culture."

My advice to her was as follows:  If anyone wants to add or comment, please do so

- Considering this person is her boss, document all conversations. Date and time stamp. This will serve a purpose when going to upper management, a potential lawyer or human resources.

- Stand her ground. DO NOT let her boss make her feel bad about herself. NEVER LET ANYONE DETERMINE YOUR SELF WORTH!

- While at times it may feel like the whole world is against you, remember, it is usually a very small, select few individuals that share this idea.

- Do NOT give an emotional reaction. Her boss is the one with the problem, not her. Her boss has gotten emotional and she is making an ass of herself, let her shoot herself in the foot! While it is OK to get angry, it is better to vent with someone else than to lash out on the bully.

- Ask for a transfer to a different department or quit. This is a toxic environment.

I think the majority of people were bullied at some point in their lives and we need to speak out! Teasing/harassing/physically harming someone based on their appearance, clothing, sexual orientation, etc should not be accepted or considered the social norm, whether it is in a classroom setting, on the street, or in the workplace. Better resources should be in place where this kind of behavior is stopped. Victims are often afraid to speak out in fear of the bully retaliating.

I would like to compliment my friend for coming out and acknowledging that this type of behavior is NOT acceptable and is taking actions towards it. Ironically enough, it took me several days to write this post and am finally able to publish it today. For those of you don't know (I bet the majority of my readers do know) on this date, 7 years ago, Sophie Lancaster passed away after being in a coma for thirteen days due to head trauma. She was at a park with her boyfriend when they were attacked by a group of teenaged boys. The reason for the attack? The clothing they wore, they were a part of the goth subculture. To this date, the victim's mother, Sylvia Lancaster, who set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation is working hard with local authorities to help prevent these kind of attacks from happening again.

I always found solace with fellow goths. I once went to a "normal people club" and it was horrible. A real "meat market" as they call it. I got my rear end grabbed by a stranger. I did not feel comfortable there at all. The common consensus was that I would be leaving the club with one of these gentlemen. When I do go to a goth club, yes, gentlemen and sometimes ladies have made advances towards me but they were respectful. I felt comfortable leaving my drink unattended with people I did not know very well. I always had a positive experience amongst the gothic community and I hope others have felt the same for the most part.  While the elitists sometimes annoy me, they do provide an endless source of entertainment!

Thank you all for reading my rant! Hopefully my friend could find employment elsewhere or resolves this matter without having to quit her job.  I find it sad that she is the one that has to look employment elsewhere while people like that remain in a management position. Here's to hoping Karma does it's trick! Good day Darklings, be safe! xoxox

A little dash of color

Trystan over at "This Is Corp Goth" launched another mid-month status report. This month's theme  is "Stripes! Plaids!Dots!" and well, I was inspired to pull out the pink stripy tights.  Trystan was a bad influence on me! My company is not really doing any presentations this time of the year, which means no clients, so I permitted myself to wear this get up to work.  I very rarely wear this outfit  at the office, it is pushing the limits a little bit but once in a while, it is nice to let your eccentricities out! The way I see it, no one sees my legs when I am sitting at my desk!

On my way for a walk!

Worn with a different skirt. Eek! cat hair! This is why I now have a lint brush in my desk drawer.

Just for the hell of it and to add to the randomness, while out walking in those stripy tights, I saw a cool Trans Am and weird looking bug! Who knows what happens when I go out wearing pink?

You don't always need a little black dress

I came across this little dress recently and I must admit, I think it is quite cute and fun! It is also appropriate for work! I like that it can be a versatile outfit: I can wear this dress with my Docs or my cute little Demonias (as seen here)

Please ignore the shopping bags in the background, I just came in from running errands!
Demonia shoes, it was hard to get a shot in but there are little skulls on the side, so cute!

Product review: Marc Anthony temporary root touch up spray

I recently purchased  this root touch up spray for about $10.00 in hopes I could prolong my next hair dye treatment. I do not have any grey yet, although I do have an active, cheeky, sarcastic, three year old so that may soon change! I do have annoying blond roots though. My hair grows pretty quickly and I am always annoyed to see that little sprout of blond on top of my head!

Pros:
It works like a hair spray, just spray on and voila! No more annoying roots.

It doesn't have a strong smell

You need a VERY small amount

I am not a "morning person" so this is a quick fix and gives me plenty of time to style my hair, do my makeup, put my contacts in, etc.

It is inexpensive and it lasts a while

Cons:
It rubs off easily.

I did spray a little too much and it made me itchy. Be careful. Less is more. When I use a small amount, I am not itchy. Be careful!

That being said, I am quite pleased with this product!

Bat Fit 2014 update

I didn't really get to work out as much as I wanted to. I had some minor set backs (dental surgery, the flu, etc)  Today, was the first time in a long time that I felt good, health wise. Despite it being extremely hot out today, I still went for a nice long walk on my lunch hour. I was feeling pretty stressed and anxious and walking helps me with that! I wore my shades and took out my trusty parasol and off I went towards my favourite walking route!

I pretty much spent my whole hour walking in the blazing heat. I had enough time when I came back to grab some water. Good thing I ate my lunch beforehand! It was a nice walk, just what I needed. I normally do this route a minimum twice a week, if the weather permits.

Very gorgeous abandoned old, Victorian house. If I win the lottery, I would buy it from the city and fix it up.

My walking shoes. Pink leopard print Vans, aren't they cute?

The little man made lake. There are normally fish and even saw a turtle once but it was too hot. I think all the fishies were hiding at the bottom.
A nice gravel path towards the lake

Mono Tiki Tia!

The title for this post was brought to you by.... an old school Scooby Doo episode! The inspiration for this post: my new Sourpuss tiki girl shirt!

I wore this to work today. It was a change from all black and was a nice, cute splash of color! My coworkers loved it! I have to wear a tank top underneath because it shows a little too much cleavage for my liking. What nice pineapples I have! Sourpuss clothing has always been one of my favorite brands! The shoes are Pleaser and can be found here: http://www.sinistersoles.com/DOLLY-02-Black-Platform-Sandals-p/s-pleaser-dolly-02-shoes-b.htm

Dentists are sadistic!

WARNING: THIS POST MAY MAKE SOME QUEEZY. IT IS ABOUT DENTAL SURGERY. Last week, I woke up with swollen gums around my last remaining wisdom tooth. I thought nothing of it. I just brushed and flossed extra hard. I thought that I just got some food stuck. It is hard to brush and floss all the way back there. I went to work and by my lunch hour, I felt some slight pain so I went to the pharmacy. I bought some Advil and mouthwash to use at the office. This was not the week for me to have pain. My boss was away on vacation and we were short staffed. A few days go by, I was in excruciating pain so I called my dentist. He was also on vacation for two weeks as per the voicemail. It is Construction Holiday here so I was not too surprised.

To those who are curious what Construction Holiday is, well it is where construction workers do not work the last two weeks of July in this Province. A lot of  other people (like my usual dentist and boss) tend to take their vacation at this time as well. It's great! There is never any rush hour traffic!

I knew, I couldn't go two weeks without any dental care. I knew my tooth had to be infected and did not want to make it any worse than it already was. I found an emergency dentist online and they squeezed me in for after work.  I was grateful for them squeezing me in but the experience left me feeling very apprehensive.

I show up, the office looks ok. There is an odd elderly woman at reception. Except, she wasn't sitting at reception, she was sitting at the side of the front desk. She appeared busy. As a receptionist, I know how annoying it can be at times, especially when I am busy and am being constantly interrupted so I decided to sit down and let her greet me when she was ready. This gave me time to look around the office. It appeared cozy and quaint enough. The dentist's diplomas were placed on the wall. There was an aquarium full of very beautiful tropical fish that also doubled as a coffee table which I found pretty cool.

Perhaps the secretary was not used to this kind of politeness but a good ten minutes went by when I finally lost patience, got up from the sofa and approached her. The assistant is then immediately called (more like shouted at to come over) and within a few moments, I was having my x-rays taken (with my piercings in) I then get placed into the dentist's chair and I meet the queen bee herself. The dentist was a tall, slender, pretty woman with blonde wavy hair and blue eyes. I thought I would feel comfortable by her feminine features but her eyes showed no warmth and she didn't smile.  She also walked in with an air of arrogance and snobbery. What happened next, totally set me off: The dentist then belittles her assistant in front of me.

Now, I worked as an Admin Assistant in the past. If you have seen the movie The Devil Wears Prada, my old boss resembled and acted a lot like Meryl Streep did in the film. I was too young, too naive at that time to defend myself and I got taken advantage of and belittled just like this poor girl was being talked down too. There are ways you can approach people by being tactful and most importantly RESPECTFUL which this was not the case. The girl looked very young, she probably just finished her Dental Assistant course. I don't mean to sound unappreciative, they did squeeze me in after all and I bet the dentist saw many patients that day so at that point and with this in mind, I tried very hard not to be TOO judgemental. I couldn't help it, that little voice inside my head screamed "RUN NOW WHILE YOU CAN"

The Devil Wears Prada

What happened next, did it for me. The dentist went on and on about my piercings, how they are bad, will damage my teeth, etc. I tried to explain that while I was aware of all this, I went to see top rated piercers in my area, I did my research well. In fact, my tongue ring was done way back in 2005 by Black Sun Studio. This place was known worldwide for their top notch piercing abilities. In fact, my belly piercing never closed when I took it out for 6 months when I was pregnant! My usual dentist had nothing but positive things to say about my piercings and even commented that none of my teeth are chipped (which often happens) because the right jewellery was used and the placement was spot on. If I had my tongue since 2005, you would think my teeth would be chipped by now.

The Queen Bee dentist then insisted I knew nothing and retorted "well I am a dentist so I know better". She then try to say that an old filling was the cause for the infection and I would need a root canal on the tooth next to my wisdom tooth. She said my dentist did not do it properly and this was the reason for my infection. If my dentist did not do it properly, which was several years ago, wouldn't I have had pain in that area by now? She also blamed my piercing for adding to the  infection, of course. Closed minded people rot my socks.

She also said she would need a panoramic x-ray to see the full wisdom tooth as my piercings were blocking it. She prescribes me anti-biotics and a referral sheet for those x-rays.

When the dentist walked away, her secretary shouted back to her to tell me (I will not list them here but she named all the nasty side effects the antibiotics may cause, thankfully for me, I was not a victim of such things!) Meanwhile, there was another patient in the other room, I am sure she overheard all this and I felt like this could of been done tactfully and discreetly. It is kind of embarrassing, ya know!

I come home and after a Web MD search, which I should of done beforehand but meh... I was in pain and not thinking straight, this dentist had horrible reviews. Out of about 10 of them, only 2 were positive. All the complaints were the same: she yells at her secretary and her assistant. I found out her secretary is her mom. Apparently, there was a high turnover of dental assistants. One review in particular talked about a botched wisdom tooth extraction. Another spoke how she will find problems that are not there. I did not walk in the other direction, I ran!
Source: Little Shop of Horrors, The Dentist
I just had to add this video!

I found a nice dentist near my house who still sent me for those x-rays but did not mind me leaving in my tongue piercing. He commented on my piercer's abilities and how they would not chip my teeth.Oh and I inquired about that root canal and "botched filing". He had no clue what I was talking about. He looked at my x-ray, at my tooth and said the filing was done perfectly. I do not need a root canal. So yeah, she was looking for more money or she was just an airhead!

Speaking of piercings, I did take all of them out except for the belly ring and tongue (can't seem to unscrew the thing so I left it in). Unfortunately, my labret is closing up. I did take it out because it was on the same side as my wisdom tooth. Oh well, when I am healed I am going to get it re-done!

The tooth extraction was done by an oral surgeon and took about 5 minutes. I even kept the tooth.!The swelling went down about an hour after the procedure. I am still in a considerable amount of pain. They had to cut the gum overlapping the tooth and cut part of my tooth itself. He then pulled the sucker out! Now I see why the dentist wanted to keep this one in when he extracted the other three! This one was a doozy!

my tooth! Yes, I kept it!
